You’ll probably have to buy the bamboo at your favorite garden store. If so, make sure you choose the right bamboo to take home. If you bring home a plant that is not completely healthy, you run the risk that it will die over time.
That’s why you should choose the plant that has living green leaves. This is very important. Do not bring any bamboo that has any kind of stain. Also, don’t choose a bamboo whose leaves don’t look totally green.
If you notice an unpleasant smell coming from the plant, it is not a good choice either. The bad smell probably means it’s sick.
Basic bamboo care
Now that you have your bamboo plant, you must know how to keep it healthy. As we mentioned, bamboo plants are hardy and do not require complicated care.
Water or soil?
Many of the bamboos grow in hydroponics. That is to say, their roots can grow perfectly immersed in water.
Make sure that the water completely covers the roots of the bamboo. Also, the water you use should not be tap water. Use rainwater or water that does not contain chlorine residues. Chlorine can damage your plant
Can you grow bamboo on soil?
Yes, you don’t need to grow bamboo in water. But you must use special soil that will give your bamboo the nutrients it needs.
Choose the ideal pot
The pot will depend to some extent on how you decide to grow your bamboo. If you have chosen to grow it in water, use a clear pot. It can be made of glass.
If you have chosen to grow your plant in soil, use a plastic or ceramic pot.
In both cases, the pot should be wide enough so that the bamboo has a good space to grow.
Bamboos like light, but you can’t expose them to direct sunlight. It’s best to have our bamboo plant in a place where it doesn’t get too much or too little light. In both cases, the plant will let you know if something is wrong.
If you start to see your bamboo leaves turn brown, it means that it is getting too much light and is burning. If you notice that its green color is getting weaker, it needs to receive more light.
As we have already told you, it is very important that you use water that is free of chlorine residues. You can use bottled water or rainwater.
If you have your bamboo in water, change the water weekly. This will also prevent the formation of bacteria.
If your bamboo is planted in soil, water only when you see that the soil is dry. In places where it is hot, you should probably water up to three times a week. Make sure the soil is always moist, but be careful not to overwater your plant.
If you want to use fertilizer, no problem. You can use fertilizer for both the soil and the water where you have grown your bamboo. Just make sure you don’t overdo it with the fertilizer.
Ideally, you should help your plant grow by using the fertilizer every eight weeks.
